Welcome to Year 3: a fun year for your child. The intensity of Year 2 and the focus on grammar, arithmetic and spelling will seem like a distant memory as the new year starts.
This stage marks the end of Key Stage 1 as your child enters Key Stage 2. The graduation from KS1 to KS2 comes with new independence and responsibility.
Increased focus on spelling
This year there is less of a focus on phonics and more emphasis on understanding and learning the spelling rules, as well as attention to prefixes and suffixes.
Development of writing skills
Our writing in Year 3 is linked strongly to our creative curriculum topics and lessons. Your child will explore different genres of writing with a focus on audience and purpose.
Mastering Maths
The national curriculum ‘mastery’ style of teaching concentrates on breadth of knowledge, and children will be encouraged to use their understanding of the new concepts to solve challenges to deepen their understanding.
Science Investigations
Science in Year 3 is engaging and fun. Children will become Scientists by using our scheme 'Love To Investigate.' The will have the opportunity to explore science in a different way.
Homework
Daily
reading and times table practise.
Weekly
Monday - New spellings
Wednesday - Children are given one piece of Maths homework. They will also receive one creative curriculum piece, linked to their current writing focus. This could be SPAG, research, writing or creative. Children have one week to hand homework in.
Annually
Once per year, each year group will have the opportunity to take part in the Home Learning Creative Project, which will be displayed in the main KS2 corridor. This project, allows families to enjoy creative time together and to discuss the children's current topic.
